This is a wonderful little guide — it’s primary audience (”thinking men”) represented well from the outset by the sometimes acid tongue of the author (Russell Smith). Check out these excerpts:

North America…is still a fundamentally Protestant and democratic place, a place which defines a man, quite sensibly, by what he accomplishes, not by how he appears. The land’s hostility, the brutal task of producing and building while surviving in such vastness, makes even art and culture low priorities, at best a luxury; at worst morally suspect, the indulgent pursuit of idlers

… and

The socialist opposition…the sensitive scorner of fashion is concerned about elitism, about consumerism, about materialism generally. He thinks it ridiculous that people should spend so much money on frippery, when people are all basically the same and so many in the world are starving. He thinks that distinctions in clothing lead to distinctions in social class, which is an injustice to be eliminated, if possible, or at least false.

So what is the thinking (and would-be fashionable) man to do? I’ll leave it to you to find out from the man himself. Highly recommended treatise on the essentials of Men’s Dress.

The intersection between the world of sport and clothing trends is explored in a current exhibition at the Victoria and Albert museum in London.

From the website:

This exhibition explores the creative connections between the two worlds of fashion and sport. Recent developments have seen an increasing number of collaborations and hybrids, from fashion designers producing collections with sportswear brands to sports personalities heading fashion campaigns or even designing their own collections. Fashion V Sport will reveal the complexities and tensions between the two industries.

Some themes explored: the tracksuit and its emergence as a wardrobe staple, sports wear as casual wear, men’s football gear, street styles, and high-tech clothing.

If you want to follow the exhibit’s blog, you can check it out here.

Not to be missed if you find yourself in London between August 5th and January 4th.

It’s that time of the year again, kids — the time to show your dad that you really care. Although Father’s day gifts cannot make up for the many years of service, support, and diaper-changing that fathers everywhere contribute to their children, we can sure do our best.

Father’s Day, a Worldwide Celebration

There are various father’s day celebrations around the world, and its date of observance varies by region and country. In Germany, for example, there is no ‘official’ Father’s day, but dads and fatherhood in general are well-represented by Männertag (men’s day), which by all-accounts involves fathers (or males of any age) partaking in any combination of the following: sausages, pub-crawling, beer, pulling wagons, mountain climbing, and passing out in the middle of random village or city street, mid-day. It’s fun to be a dad! Or in Deutsch – Es ist gut, dass ein Vater (google translation I must admit).

In Thailand, Father’s day falls on the date of the King’s birth (currently December 5th), and is not only a celebration of that well-loved Monarch (with traditional Thai singing and dance celebrations), but also of fathers in general.

In the United States, Father’s day began in the very early 20th century as a way to commemorate fatherhood in the tradition of Mother’s day. It has since spread to our good neighbors to the north, Canada, as well as many other countries such as Great Britain, Ireland, and Australia. In many regions, such as North America, gifts are given in appreciation and many dad’s get the day off (if they are lucky), but some just ending up working the grill anyway for fun.

Taking Care of Your Tall Daddy

Here at Tall Guy Style, we are always looking out for those tall guys who are sometimes hard-to-shop for, and of course we don’t want to leave the tall dads out. With that in mind, here are some gift ideas especially for your tall father, be he slim, slender, or chubby. Read on…

Grooming and Shaving

Okay, these are not technically tall dad-only gifts, as every man needs to look (and smell) good. Check out the Grooming Lounge for some quality cologne, shaving, and skin care products which will surely add some pizazz to your dad’s daily shower and shave routine. For example:

After Shave Balm from Acqua Di Parma. Subtle touches of Aloe and Almond Oil. $67

The Greatest Shave Ever! Literally. Featuring face wash, shave cream, shave oil, and aftershave. $71.

Sweater Love

Although Father’s day in the U.S. occurs in June, it’s never too early to think about that most warm and cozy of father’s day gifts, the sweater, an item which all dads appreciate. How about getting your tall dad one with sleeves that fit – not too bulky, and not too small or short. You can even get one in lovely spring colors. He’ll love ya for it.

What to wear this weekend? Well it’s summer in the Northern Hemisphere my friend. As you head out into your own international world of mystery, why not take a *sartorial* cue from Cary Grant? As seen in the Hitchcock film To Catch a Thief, one of the 50 most influential films of all time, according to Men’s Vogue.

Is Cary Grant the world’s best-dressed tall man ever?

At 6′1″ Cary Grant was certainly very tall by Hollywood standards, a place where any actor (Tom Cruise?) can be made to look like a giant on screen. Grant was a master at owning his own image; As you can see from many of the pictures available of Grant going about his personal life, his aura of a style, confidence, and ease traveled with him onset and off. Yet he always had the ability to crack a smile or have a laugh at himself.

Since, at 6′1″, Grant was so much physically taller than many of his contemporary actors and in many ways didn’t fit the Hollywood mold, we at TGS must applaud not only his fashion sense, but also his demeanor and straight-up cajones as a Hollywood player. Tall man, we salute you!

I don’t know if it is the sound of the word itself, or perhaps the way people say it — often with a curious disdain, mixed with a somewhat envious tone. You’re so skinny! Oh my god! Hey skinny man! Skinny boy, come here! How do you stay so skinny? It’s simply not an elegant word at all. It has no presence, as a term; there’s not really a hint of respectability about it. I hate the word, absolutely, I do.

Being ‘too thin’ in the United States is sometimes like being an outcast in general society - an untouchable. It seems odd, looking back on American cultural history - one in which the skinny, slim, and long have contributed so much – that being this side of slender would be so frowned upon in modern times. So why are we so hated and mistreated in this land of the free? (um, free 5 pc McNuggets if you buy a Big Mac). I have a theory, if you would please indulge me:

A Once Skinny Nation

America as a nation, has always had the mythical status of the ‘land of plenty’. Immigrants come from all over the world – yes those tired and hungry, those seekers of freedom. The haggard souls save all of their money to board ships to the New World, with only their hopes to keep them alive on the voyage. The journey begins, sailing the open seas. The destination: America. Finally, at some point (usually at dawn), the clouds begin to part above the water, and behold – the Statue of Liberty! Lady Liberty, accept us, they say. We are the poor, the tired, and the skinny. Make us whole, make us rich, make us portly and full. Give us all of your splendor, all that life has to offer, all the double cheeseburgers we can shake a stick at! Give us more, more more!

And so it goes. As a nation, we have tried to remove, from the collective consciousness, the original ’skin’, or state of skinniness that is our birthright. Quite simply, being thin has often been associated with meagerness, and with lack.

But I tell you, dear reader, this is not so! I ask you, to look around you, and see what this denial of our thin roots has given us! It has given us overweight and bloated fellow Americans. Our own brethren, who cannot ‘take the stairs’, without huffing, puffing, and just about keeling over. Americans who really could use two seats on a flight between New York and Boston – one for themselves, and one for their gut. It has given us double and triple cheese-what-nots and super-large fry baskets.

I tell you, friend, that we need a return to our roots. We need to reach back into our collective past, and remember the time when this country was the ‘land of the thin’! A country of springy, spry, wiry, jumpy, agile, flexible, bendy, rubbery souls who would laugh at eating more than 3 potatoes at one meal, or turn up their noses at a plate of cupcakes.

And a Tall Skinny Man Wearing Shorts Shall Lead Them?

Um, well perhaps not. In fact quite doubtful. It certainly ain’t me. However, the point of this article is this: I need some shorts. I need shorts that are proportional to my body. I need shorts that roll down to my knees. I have no intention of being ridiculed by the masses in the ‘haha- look-at-me-I’m-not-tall-and-skinny and-I-got-these-shorts-at-the-Gap-crowd’. I need good looking, stylish, and well-made shorts, NOT big and tall (god forbid I would want big and tall shorts, jeez), not freakin’ camouflage, and not cut off jeans.

So fine, I have a need, but what am I going to do about it? Well, I’ll tell you what I’m going to do. I’m going to find some shorts!

Oh, wait, I already found some shorts. Anyway, with no further ado, announcing:

Da-da-da-da,,,

The Tall Mens Shorts Shop! (Boy that has a funny ring to it, huh?) Check it out! And if you know of any more resources for shorts for tall men, please let me know, and I will keep adding!

Cheers

The goal: make it as easy as possible to shop for quality mens clothing in tall sizes. To further that goal, we just added the Tall Guy Shop.

Have you ever wanted to walk into a store and see everything in your size? As a tall man I personally haven’t had that feeling since I was a teenager. Thanks to the magic of the web, we created the Tall Guy Shop so that finally, we can shop in a place with sizes made for us – sleeves that fit, extra long pants, and large shoes.

Hmmm, just a little slice of heaven for you. Enjoy!

If you are interested in designer jeans, you will probably want to check out True Jeans. True Jeans was founded to help men and women find jeans that really fit their body shape.

They carry a variety of designer jeans, including a few pairs by 7 for all Mankind, one company which is known for producing longer lengths. True Jeans even gives you a custom fit kit which helps you to learn more about your particular measurements, which can only be a good thing.

I haven’t yet experienced ordering a pair of jeans from them, but if you have any experiences (as a tall man or woman) please let me know by leaving a comment, I am very interested.
